The mountains of Torridon, in the far north-west of Scotland, are unique in the Highland landscape. Made of ancient sandstones laid down in pre-Cambrain seas, they present as a collection of tiered walls topped by weathered ridges, the highest capped in pale grey quartzite. This is a land of rock and water, the landscape signed by weathering agents both ancient and current. Spectacular corries, lonely lochans, clear burns free of the tint of peat; all this pressed up against the fjordic sea lochs of the Atlantic, Torridon is a special place in these isles.
