Scotland - Mother Country : Despite the short days of Autumn and Winter, the Highlands offer the best in British landscape photography. Though no longer a true wilderness, only here in the UK can one escape the obvious signs of man, such as roads, walls and agriculture that intrude further south. Scotland, arguably, has the only true 'majestic' landscapes in Britain; from many locations in the Highlands the vista for 360 degrees is of more mountains stretched to the horizon, the scene embellished by lochs, rivers and rugged amber beauty.

Gritstone Country : The higher fells of the Dales are typically composed of Millstone Grit, a coarse sandstone overlying (and hence younger than) the limestones. Whilst it makes for popular rock climbing, it offers photographers beautiful sculptural forms, supports the only tarns in the Dales and showcases classic moorland flora and fauna.

ManMade Dales : carved out by glaciers, the Dales is nonetheless a man-made landscape; little of what the visitor encounters is not continually managed. The legacy of man's presence, stretching back for centuries, is writ large through the ubiquitous field barns and miles of dry-stone walls to the traditional farming practices of today. The distinctive building material and style, very different from the surrounding area, makes for excellent photography.

Hills of Torridon : The mountains of Torridon, in the far north-west of Scotland, are unique in the Highland landscape. Made of ancient sandstones laid down in pre-Cambrain seas, they present as a collection of tiered walls topped by weathered ridges, the highest capped in pale grey quartzite. This is a land of rock and water, the landscape signed by weathering agents both ancient and current. Spectacular corries, lonely lochans, clear burns free of the tint of peat; all this pressed up against the fjordic sea lochs of the Atlantic, Torridon is a special place in these isles.

Skye : Skye is a place apart, only proximally part of Britain. These photos were made on a perfect Easter trip with a combination of unusually cold and dry conditions, the snow held fast thanks to a blocking high and easterly winds. The light was also exceptional, helped by cloud later in the week. Stunning!

Come with me on a friendly, dynamic imaging course in either the Yorkshire Dales or the majestic Scottish Highlands. You will be taken to compelling landscape locations where technical know-how and creative tips will be shared in a supportive, casual manner.
I have over fifteen years experience as a teacher, the last four as photography lecturer at Craven College in Skipton. My local knowledge and passion for the environment in which we will learn is extensive. I tailor these photographic outings to your needs, from accessible local favourites to late light captures in remoter settings.
